Solicitor Fees

I've put down a deposit on a property and enlisted the services of a solicitor. At this point and in the current climate it's looking highly unlikely I'll sign the contract.

I'm just wondering will I still be charged for the solicitor? The contracts were sent out last week and mortgage approval is on the way but to date I've probably had a two minute conversation with him.
 
Presumably the solicitor may bill you for expenses incurred to date but not for the professional conveyancing fee or outlays. Why not just ask him?
 
Thanks ClubMan. Keep changing my mind over the last two weeks on whether I want to go through with it, so until I'm definite did not want to mention anything to Solicitor

Well if you opt not to keep him informed of any possible uncertainty on your part, don't blame him if he proceeds in the meantime to work away on your file as normal and ultimately asks you to pay for the cost of his work.
 
You should tell your solicitor that you are not sure you are proceeding because at the moment he could well be checking title, raising precontract enquiries etc. Or may have already done so. I have often had clients ring and say- look there are loan offers/contracts on the way to you but I'm not 100% sure- in that case I would tell the client I would hold the documents and take no action until advised further- and then would not charge a fee.
 
I'll give him a ring tomorrow to give him a head's up on my reservations. Thanks for that - will probably save me a grand should I not go through with it
