Anyoune know of a software that would allow employees to view word or publisher data but will prevent it from being copied or printed?

We are currently developing company technical manual and want employees to use it on screen but dont want it getting out of the office.

Thanks for your help.

Re: Software that allows viewing only???

You could create a PDF, and disable printing.

However, it will be very difficult to stop it leaving the office, no matter what format it is in.

if it appears on a screen it can be printed...

Re: Software that allows viewing only???

Adobe PDF can create a documet that cannot be printed or copied & pasted from.

However as jhegarty said if it can be seen on a computer screen you can press the "Print Screen" button found on every keyboard. This will take a snapshot picture of everything on the screen and allow it to be pasted into a word doucment as an image.

So a determied person with time could replicate the document in a printable format.

Also if employee has access to email they could email the document as an attachment.

Another approach would be to limit access to a need to know basis.

Another way would be to assign each member of staff who needs the document there own version (without them knowing). Each page has a slight variation compared to the same page in someone elses document (maybe change a word, punctuation etc). That way if the document does get leaked you should be able to identify where the leak came from and sack the relevant person.

If you do find another way of doing this please let us know.

Best of Luck!

You could maybe get a touch-sensitive screen and just display the manual on a terminal (without keyboard or mouse)

A bit like they do in supermarkets, to display wine information etc.

There is free software available online with a quick google that can open these so they can be copied and pasted from, so I wouldnt go down the locked pdf route.
as above, once its on a pc anyone can either print or take off and print elsewhere, so currently about your only option is to put the doc on a standalone pc with all ports disabled for printing, internet access, mail and media copying (usb, floppy,cd etc) and restrict NW access so only you can make a file available on it.
