Social benefits rent payment cut off without notice

I have a tenant who was getting social benefits to pay the majority of his rent.Only after inquiring why the rent had not been paid for 2 months (after 2 years of it being paid this way) did they say that they should only have been
paying the rent for 3 months. Is this possible or an excuse?

There was no warning given to either myself or my tenant
that payment would be stopped. This has left him with a bill of
what is now 3 months rent, without any advance notice to allow for
such a big bill.

Any advice as to what I can do about maybe getting the last 3 months
rent from the Social benefits people?

All help welcome, thanks.

Firstly, this is posted in the wrong forum. try welfare and benefits forum.
Secondly, can you restate/clarify your query? Who are "they"? remember too that the CWO is paying the tenant the Rent Supplement, not the landlord. Payment of actual rent is between you and the tenant and nothing to do with the HSE

Whatever way he was getting social benefits to pay his rent, "they"
(the government presumably) paid a percentage of the rent directly
into my account and what was left over was paid by the tenant.

What I'm asking is who do I talk to about getting confirmation that they can
stop payment without notice and if it's possible to get the backdated rent
for the past 3 months they haven't paid into my account as before.

What you're talking about is rent Supplement, I presume, paid by the HSE via a Community Welfare Officer? If that is so, your tenant would have applied for this and would have been means tested. In other words, payment of the supplement is dependant on tenant's interaction with CWO. If the payment ceased after three months, the tenant should be aware as to the reasons for this. He should contact the CWO inthe first instance to see why it ceased.

There could be two reasons for this and it is up to the tenant to sort out(even if most of rent allowance is paid into your a/c.
The agreement might have been for short term till tenant sorted himself out.
Did your tenant give you a pink form to sign this has to be returned twice a year, if it does not go in on time rent allowance will be stopped.

1800 520 520 should be able to tell you the C.W.O. for the area, give them a ring and have a chat to see what's happened. If they are awkward trying ringing another CWO to get their opinion, sometimes you get a CWO who thinks it's their own cash and gets very awkward. Have the Citizens Advice Bureau any advice?
