Hi,

I got a well dug recently but when I run the water there is an awful smell of it and I cannot use it.

Anyone any ideas.

Our well water smells of sulphur - had it tested and it's completely safe to drink just smells awful. We don't drink it - we just boil it for tea etc.

Hi Massey2,

Everyone with a newly bored well should have it tested in an authorised laboratory before consuming the water. You should get them to test for bacteria, chemistry and metals.

Your water probably has Manganese (Mn) and Iron (Fe) and possibly HydrogenSulphide in it. If you run the tap for several minutes does the smell improve or disimprove?

Armed with the full laboratory results you should get quotations for Fe/Mn/HydrogenSulphide removal system from a reputable water treatment firm (see golden pages listings).

Thanks for the reply's.

Ajapale the smell does improve after a while of running the water. Sometimes I do setup a hose to the outside tap and let it run for an hour and a half this helps but its a bit of a pain.
As you said i'll have to get it tested so thats my next mission.
