We are hoping to buy a smart tv - c. 40 inches- 600 euro range.

We don't have UPC or Sky subscription, but have Eircom broadband (understand they will add tv services soon).

In the interim, what do we need to access basic channels like Irish tv stations- can we access from Wi fi and subscribe to AerTv.ie or similar?

Just an aerial should be enough to get you free access to the basic Irish Saorview channels. Most modern TVs you buy here will support Saorview, if in doubt, ask.

Tv

Thanks for feedback. Will we need a lot of wiring for aerial, as we just got house done up!

Is there any other way?

Thanks

It'll depend on where you're located. The Coverage Check on the site I linked will give you a good starting point, if you are reasonably close to a transmitted, an indoor aerial might do the trick.

The alternative is a pay TV service which will require more equipment and similar levels or more wiring along with installation/subscription charges.

It should be possible to re-purpose the UPC cabling to connect an outdoor or in-attic aerial for Saorview if an internal aerial in insufficient.

Yes UPC cabling in situ

Then you should have miminal re-cabling to do.

I think its worth getting a decent aerial on the roof, or attic and connecting it to the UPC cables. The quality is much better than the signal that might be still on the UPC cables you still have.
