Hi - am looking to move a small office - only 2 filing cabinets - trying to do it on the cheap. Anyone know where I might find used boxes to carry the files in? (tried jumbletown, no joy & thought maybe somewhere a bit more office oriented might be more useful)

if moving urself then would it be possible to just remove the drawers, keeping conents in them and then re-insert the drawers at other end. drawers come out quite easily.

Not used boxes, but Viking are generally cheap - would the likes of archive boxes be suitable? About €3-4 each.

www.vikingdirect.ie

Failing that, you could get talking to your local newsagent - they usually have plenty of boxes that they don't use.

Much tooo heavy!

Thanks Caveat....but at 39.99 for 10, was hoping someone who has moved would be looking to get rid of their boxes cheap....seems a shame to my ecological (read: thrifty - which is why I'm on AAM ;)) heart to just throw them out after one use.

We did this with 5 filing cabitnets when we moved office. It involved taking the drawers down one flight of stairs and back up another flight of stairs. A very fit 18 year old did the donkey work.

Could you not just pop into your local supermarket and ask them if they have any boxes that they could give you?

If you want boxes - I'd go for apple boxes ( they are the right size)- try your local supermarket or fruit shop. If you only have two filing cabinets you could even take bunches of files, tie them with string, and put in your boot without any box.

Maybe you could sell them again.

tie them with string
Very good idea - but how much does a piece of string cost?

Get a hand truck

caveat: if your office is a touchy feely place with much sick leave and a you might think twice about letting the staff use it for fear of back injury claims

UPSIDE - I have a pile of boxes here to get rid of - just got a load of stock in.you can have them
DOWNSIDE - Im in Limerick, long journey for you for a few boxes

Thanks Agadele but the deed is now done! I know you've all been having fun at my thrifti/stingi-ness but... got 15 boxes from a friend, who had them in his attic since his move; got 10 from supermarket; bought 10 from Viking. Most of these boxes (those that survived) will now be attic-ed for the next move....which will be soon enough AAARGH!! (No wonder moves are in the top 10 stressors!)
Thanks everyone for helpful hints, esp the apple boxes Vanilla!

Well I suppose not only did you save money, but also a tree. That's pretty good going.

Totally agree - no point in unnecessary expenditure when there are no/lower cost options available.
