There is clearly a problem in renting a car on Italy and crossing the Slovenian border with it.

People we know of were turned back at the border last week. It seems to be an insurance issue.

Check with the car hire company in advance.

I would expect so. Most car companies don't let you take their cars into other countries. For example if you hire a car from Avis in Ireland you will be allowed to take it into Northern Ireland but not into the rest of the UK.

This is normal, unless you arrange it with the car company before hand, you'll be given a car that only meets the national standard. Driving over the border in mainland Europe can involve not only more paper work, but additional equipment such as alcohol testing kits, yellow vests, different emissions tests, stickers for driving on motor ways etc.

Insurance is valid throughout the EU. I doubt it is an insurance issue per se but more a case of documentation. It is very unusual to get a border check between Italy and Slovenia as they are both in the schengen area.

Strange story.
In last few years I've driven, along with masses of Italian reg cars across the It-Sl border near Trieste, Goriza and Treviso. Didn't see a single official. In one city -Goriza - the streets cross backwards and forwards between the two states.

Must have been an unusual spot check and the insurance aspect sounds the most likely.

In any event Italian car-hire companies usually make no problem ,or small charge, for allowing their cars into Slovenia. They usually stamp something - I never checked what -on the car-hire papers when you tell them you intend driving across a border.

Slovenia being a Balkan country probably still requires green cards for visiting cars.

I currently have a car on hire in Holland and on the windscreen it has a list of countries that the car cannot be brought into and Slovenia is on the list together with Slovakia, Romania and a list of others.

What was car rental company? Did they have in their T&C that you can drive car to other countries?
