Sliding doors - security

Just the One said:

I have sliding doors to the rear of my house and have heard that it is very easy to open them/gain unwanted entry for burgulars. Something about being able to grab the lock and pull back?????

Has anyone any information on this or suggestions for securing the doors further? Is it advisable to get extra locks on them?
