Skyscanner - trying to understand how pricing works.

I've been a big fan of Skyscanner for quite a few years now. I love the way you can check whole of month and set alerts etc etc. However, I'm looking at holidaying in the US in the Fall this year and the pricing seems erratic to say the least.

For example, when I go into the tool the prices for October / November are as follows with preferred dates being Oct 20th @ €217 returning on Nov 4th @ €169 or so I thought (total €386):

However, when I click on my preferred date of October 20th it immediately changes the price for the return flight from €169 to €469 giving a total of €638 per person - a difference of > €500 for 2 people

Am I missing something?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

I've noticed that the price changes for return legs sometimes, particularly on longer haul. I think it's to do with selling return flights for standard trip lengths. I have not explained my thinking well there but l think it's the airlines that move the prices.
