skoda octavia gearbox noise

I have been aware of what sounds like a bearing noise which disappears
when the clutch is depressed. It is not very loud but i fear it may get worse. The car's performance is not affected.
Does anybody have any idea what this might be?

That noise is your clutch release bearing. You would normally only replace when changing clutch assy, as the labour cost is quite expensive. I would not be to concerned about the noise.
