Ski destinations during summer

Has anyone stayed at ski destinations during summer months?

Of course, its the off-ski season so accomodation is very reasonable and all restaurants / bars remain open....its a real lakes and mountains holiday

We've had a place in Austria recomended by a family member. Just wondering if anyone has done likewise?
 
Verbier in Switzerland is a good spot as well, has a glacier suitable for ski-ing all year round very convenient to Lake Geneva area which is beautiful in the summer.

I'm whimpering now, I used to live there for 2 years :(
 
Sounds a good spot....just to clarify though, I'm not looking for places that you can ski during summer....quite the opposite in fact....just many of the ski resorts open their doors to alternative sun seekers looking for mountains / lakes etc etc
 
We were in the US and stayed in Lake Tahoe in September- they wer starting to get ready for their Ski season and it was fairly quiet but it was still a great holiday and we had a ball.
We were also at Lake Geneva (Montreux) and the Swiss Alps (a few days around Jungfrau among other places) in August - great time had by all. Open all year round - there was no skiing happening but still lots of tourists.
 
Just on both of these spots - Lake Tahoe had goodweather - Switzerland was a bit mixed with torrential rain a couple of days :-( until we got to Montreux where it was really hot
 
The Chamonix valley is great during the summer.

There are lovely walks/hikes up in the mountains as they keep many of the gondala's open.

The valley is close to Geneva airport as well.

Around town all the bars and restaurants are open and the place is hopping with climbers, bikers, walkers and tourists.

I would note though that it is handy to have a car to travel to and within the valley.
 
cheers, thanks for that. its not the type of holiday we've gone on in the past, but thought it time for something different.

we've been recomended a place called Zellum-Zee (spelling?) in Austria....have done plenty of internet research, but if anyone has first hand info of the area t'would be great

Yeh, I'd vouch for Verbier.
Also check out Leysin, which is a little nearer Lake Geneva.

You should buy a weekly train ticket so that you can use mainland rail and shoot off up to the resorts as well on the same ticket.
