If concrete/block you will need a raw plug. If metal, and the screw is self tapping, you will need a slighty smaller bit than the screw.

In another shop the guy said i could screw in without drilling a hole as is self tapping but i might need a pilot bit

D DavyJones Registered User Messages 1,987 18 Jul 2009 #4 A pilot hole is drilling the metal first with a smaller diameter bit than the screw. I would go with a 2 or a 2.5mm bit.
