Sign on for just two days?

I have a friend who works in the construction industry. After the Christmas holidays, he was due back to work on Thursday 3rd January. His employer has now told him not to come back to work until Monday 7th, the site will not open until then. Can he sign on for the two days he will be off work with no pay?

The first three days of Joseeker's Benefit/Allowance is not paid unless linked to another SW claim. Unless this is so, there is no point in signing on.

it might be worthwhile though - what if the site does not open when it should? and the Saturday might count as a workday.

Thanks for the replies. Saturday is not counted as a work day for them. If the site does not open on the Monday he'll sign on then.

A girl I know has a husband who works in construction and signs on for days when there is no work or when they are 'rained off'. It seems to be a standard thing to do in this type of work.

Yes, but does he get paid SW for those days? To do so, he would have to signing on for at least 3 days in 6.

I don't know if he gets social welfare but as I said it seems to be the normal practice. I presume if he is rained off he doesn't know when he will be back at work again thus the requirement to sign on.

I do know he doesn't get paid by his employer for rained off days.

Yeah, with global warming, maybe he's right ...

Following on from my original question - it turns out they were due back to work on the Wednesday but had to take three days off unpaid. This is due to happen again at Easter so should my friend put in a claim for the three days at the beginning of this month (so these will be the three days he isn't paid for) or would the Easter claim be treated as a different claim?

(Hope that makes sense!)

Yes, he should sign on for the 3 days. The Easter claim, if it happens, will link to the 3-day claim adn he will be paid benefit from day one of the Easter break as he will already have served the three "waiting days" (i.e. not paid days).

Thanks for your help Welfarite. Silly question next, how does he sign on? Does he have to call in to the SW office or can he phone them?

He will have to present himself in person at his nearest local office. He will need two forms of ID, one which is photo ID, and proof of address (utility bill).
