Side gate recommendation

some ppl are just not good at this sort of stuff
Assuming the requisite number of limbs and brain, most people can learn.

Edit to correct myself here; many folks are without one or more limbs and can also learn new skills.

Few of us are Cordon Bleu cooks, but we can all knock together an edible meal. And if the first effort isn't great, we'll try again.

My point really is that having a go is worthwhile.

Learning new skills is always worth the effort, not just for the skill itself, but for the self development it brings.

If you learned to ride a bike, drive a car or swim; you can learn how to screw some pieces of wood together.

Choosing not to do it, is completely different, you have freedom of choice after all.

But don't say you can't do it.

Agree in having a go is worthwhile, but I like attempting stuff like that, alot of others arent bothered, cause they have no interest and are no good at it.
In saying that, I am absolutely useless at wood work, not for the lack of trying.. now I could go out and do a course and get more expensive machinery to do that, but thats a little out of scope for the OP

But don't say you can't do it.

The only problem is that a carpenter friend always says he loves DIY people because he gets so much work out of their bad attempts. I feel also that there is a reason why people serve an apprenticeship

Sorry I was away for a bit so didn’t respond to my thread. My dad could fix electrics, create built in wardrobes, manage basic plumbing and it saved a fortune. But I never learned those skills. When I finally bought a house in my forties, I went out and got a drill and tried putting up a few shelves. It didn’t work out at all and left ugly holes in the wall. So I’m reluctant to experiment further with that kind of thing. In relation to the gate, I’ll have to agree on a solution with my neighbour but I can see how it might be doable otherwise, if you had the tools. I guess there’s an element of confidence to all this.

Thanks @DannyBoyD for the encouragement, I do appreciate it. Unfortunately I don’t find YouTube videos great owing to a lack of patience on my part - this applies to all topics. But I would more than happily join a diy class where I could try it all out. I think schools used to run these but I don’t see them advertised these days.

I hear you. I’m in the same boat.

The best advice I’d give my younger self is to generate a network of qualified plumbers, electricians, carpenters etc. Pay the extra to get the job done professionally and just enjoy the outcome.
