Sickness while on benefit

I am receiving J/S benefit and have been told to go every Thursday to the Social Welfare office in Dublin to show evidence of looking for work. This has been going on for 12 weeks now.
Last week I was unable to attend because I had a bad back spasm- a legacy of a slipped disc 10 years ago. I am familiar with the problem as it happens a couple of times a year and know that absolute rest and a high dosage of Voltarol sorts it out after a couple of days.
I telephoned the Social welfare office to let them know I wouldn't be attending and they told me I needed a sick note from my doctor. I am on benefits of €188/ week and a house call from my Doctor is €85. Is this reasonable for the Welfare to insist on a doctors note? After all, if I was employed I wouldn't need a sick note until I had been off sick for three days.
As it turned out I was able to attend the welfare in person on the following Monday with proof of looking for work, so effectively I was two days late in attending due to sickness. Has anybody else had to provide a doctors note because of missing a meeting at the welfare?

If you are sick, then you may be considered unavailable for work on those days. This is why you were asked for a sick note/medical cert. If the illness lasts several days, then you should apply for Illness Benefit.

Have you applied for a medical card? If there is no other household income, then you may be entitled.
