Dont know what you mean by a breather and anti blow back but don't all shower trays (like sinks and handbasins) have a water trap underneath to prevent this very problem. Perhaps your water seal is being syphoned away for some reason.

This has happened to me occasionally and I have found that there is usually hair or glar(?) down the plughole. You can normally scoop a lot of it out with tweezers.

I then used drain cleaner overnight and flushed with plenty of hot water.

Seemed to do the trick.

Yes it happens because of the quality of the trap has been not so good, i think always beware while choosing the trap. And always try to clean it up the trap weekly basis, so it will not create a problem again and again.

If the shower waste is connected directly to a single stack system of above ground drainage(quite popular in this country) the trap seal may be siphoned out causing sewage odours in the shower area. This is happening quite a lot these days because the shower traps fitted have the wrong depth of seal.
Shallow seal 38mm Discharge to gulley traps
Deep Seal 76mm, All traps fitted to a single stack systems should have 76mm trap seals. This depth of seal is a regulation and is not been enforced.
Reason: No inspection/regulation of any Plumbing/Heating installations in this country!!
