Health Insurance Health insurance brokers

I switched to a Laya plan a couple of years ago based on a recommendation by Snowby and I was happy with it. My policy is due for renewal before the end of the year, so I'm wondering if this is still the best plan for me.

As Snowby is, unfortunately, no longer active on the site, I'm considering using Total Health Cover to get their recommendations. Does anybody know how much this costs? I don't want to unnecessarily spend money if they end up recommending the plan I'm currently on.

I just found the cost on the site - it's €125. https://www.totalhealthcover.ie/fee-based_consultation_with_dermot_goode___total_health_cover

There are a few others that seem to do the same comparisons below.
There is the health insurance comparison tool also from the HIA linked below too.

It's hard to know who to ask, it seems total health cover may be worth it. Dermot Goode says to always change a plan but choosing the right plan is next to impossible

Did you contact Total health cover yet?
I enquired and it seems they could be helpful but they may recommend Irish life as they have a deal with them

Hi Curlyfella, I haven't contacted them. Policy due for renewal on Dec 1, so I still have time.

I split these out from another thread to compile a Key Post on health insurance brokers.

The problem with brokers generally is that only Irish Life, I think, actually pays commission. ( Can anyone confirm if Laya or VHI pays commission?) So with the best will in the world, from the broker's point of view, Irish Life products will tend to appear attractive.

So you might end up being advised on the best Irish Life plan, rather than the best plan out there.

Brendan

I called Cornmarket and another insurance group who both recommended me plans from Irish Life, currently insured with Laya at the moment. They both gave me similar alternatives from Irish life, however they did not really advise if I could get more bang for my buck with Laya. It was more of a this is what Irish life have to offer pointing me in that direction.

If you want expert and impartial advice across all 330 health insurance plans, then you should avail of a fee-based consultation with Dermot Goode and his team. This ensures you get best advice at all times based on your own personal requirements across all health insurers.

I presume that they refund the fee if you opt for an Irish Life product through them?

What does "Laya at the min." mean?

Ah. Do you mean

"I am with Laya at present.
I called Cornmarket and another insurance group who both recommended me plans from Irish Life."

Brendan
Yes basically, perhaps the plans quoted by the both brokers from Irish Life are actual better alternatives. But as you said, Irish Life may be the only insurer in the market who offer commission so therefore that is a a conflict of interest in itself when a broker ''advises'' you.

No mention of that in their terms of business. In fact, it allows for them to charge a fee and also receive commission...

"Remuneration - Our normal method of remuneration is by fee or where necessary via a commission payment In some
cases, our remuneration may be a combination of both
. These will be disclosed to you either before you accept any of
our services or as part of the normal generic or specific disclosure requirements as set out by the Central Bank of Ireland.
Our standard rate for individual or family reviews is €125 (phone-based) or €195 for a face-to-face consultation. For
corporate or company scheme reviews, an hourly rate of €150 applies but each enquiry is assessed on a case-by-case
basis depending on the scheme size and requirements. In most cases, a fixed cost for the review is agreed up-front." ront.
