Shopping in Gibraltar?

Hey Guys,

Just wondered if anyone had bought electronics/jewellery (high value stuff, essentially) in Gibraltar and what you thought?

Thinking of buying a ring over there, websites look good value - how reputable would jewellers be over there? Is there good value? Only going as a day trip...

We went on a day trip two years ago and would never ever contemplate buying anything there. We went into quite a few shops and the service was deplorable to the degree that we bought nothing. We also went into a pub for something to eat and the food was disgusting. If you do decide to go there, make sure you get the Gibraltar English Currency, otherwise they will rip you off (again) with their exchange rates. Don't know anything with regard to their jewellary, sorry.

On a more positive note, we did the trip around the rock and it was fabulous. Beware of the monkeys - they will steal anything!!
 
Thanks Mary, much appreciated....need to know as much as we can before we go - don't have much time and will need to leave some breathing space to get it resized if need be!!

One other thing to remember is that duty-free limits apply to anything you buy and bring back over the border.
The Spanish have a long-standing dispute with the British over Gibraltar and this can lead to long delays crossing the border at La Linea.
 
I have an Apt in Spain quite close to Gib. Main street a bit tacky. Definitely good value cigs,tobacco and booze- even cheaper than Spain but stay within customs limits. Bring sterling or change money at frontier near airport. If using Euros in shops, ask for the price in Euro before purchase. Taxi tour up and around the Rock not to be missed, good value and educational. Not so sure about electronic items,cameras etc. ?
Jewellery seems good value and good selection but I would not be an expert in this area.Do yr homework , dont impulse buy and you might do alright. Plenty of Jewellery shops but owned by a small No. of family businesses. Food and drink cheaper and better in Spain. Visit Gib. Crystal in corner of Casemates square
