Setting up online retail business offshore?

Hi All,

I'm looking into doing online retailing. I already have five bricks and mortar stores but see some new opportunities online. There are a few issues that I'd like to ask the community here about.

1. I'd like to avoid having to charge Irish VAT rates (21% in my sector), price probably being the biggest competitive factor online. I believe that the location(country) of the server on which the site is hosted has some bearing on the taxes applied. Any ideas of about this and the pros and cons involved?

2. Anyone have any info regarding registering a company offshore, retrieving profits etc?

3. Alternatively, what are the implications for an Irish company trading outside of the state?

Many thanks.

It's the place of registration of the company, as well as 'where' it does business. It wont make a difference if you're hosting in the US but 'trading' in Ireland.

Even if you incorporate outside Ireland etc., you can still end up having to register for VAT etc., in Ireland if you do more than a certain level of business with Irish companies.

This is one to take specialist advice on. Tell your accountant to do some research.
