Setting up a business

Hi all,

I hope I'm not asking a question that is already in here but I can't seem to find the right thread.
I'm a PAYE worker and I'm also in the process of starting up a business as a domestic appliance engineer to supplement my wages but with a view to do it full time in the future, fingers crossed.
I'm building a website and will be advertising soon and I'm not sure what the best way to go about it with the tax man is.
Do I just set up as a sole trader, as my income will be pretty low for a few years, or do i need to register for VAT.
I was told by some people that I should do it all on the QT and just do cash jobs but I'm not really happy doing that as I'd hate to get dobbed in to the taxman.
I'd like to set up legit and was hoping for some advice.
I'm sure I should be giving you some more info about my plans so please ask.

Regards

RH
