Serving 1 month notice

I got offered a job and they need me to start by end of Feb. I'm in current job for 8 months and my contract states 1 month's notice.

I am expected to work this month out but the offer from new job is too good to not take up. I hate to leave on bad terms but I will if it comes to it. I'm just wondering on legal side can they try take some sort of action?

I thought that if I were less than 2 years in a job then I would only need to give 1 week's notice?

All advice welcome.

Thanks

I suspect you can break your contract and forfeit the salary that would be due for the weeks not worked. Are you paid a month in arrears?

But, I'm not a contract lawyer.

I'd say - suit yourself.

Best of luck!

Have you actually given notice yet? The best thing is to be open and honest with your employer and ask if you can leave earlier. They have no reason to say no, nobody wants a soon to be ex employee hanging around getting paid :). Plus of course treating people well is always a good idea - never burn your bridges.
