separately assessed can't use ros

I'm married and we're both PAYE workers, but we chose (about 20 years ago, lol) to be assessed separately for tax.

Recently I started trying to use the Ros service. I had my pin no. etc., but couldn't get set up. After a long rigmarole involving phonecalls that went around in circles (i.e the fifth crowd I called told me I should ring the first lot!) I finally got to a point a few weeks later where I could access my tax record. I then tried to use the system to claim credits for medical expenses and waste charges. But I kept getting the message:
"Unfortunately we cannot process your request because of the Basis of Assessment of information held on your record."
After two more protracted phonecalls this am, I've finally been informed that: Married people who are separately assessed cannot use the Ros system. Apparently I'll have to send my information by snailmail!

Without going into the merits and demerits of separate vs joint assessment (I may well change over in the near future) this seems a crazy situation to me. If the Revenue offer an option of separate assessment, surely they can devise a computer programme that will deal with people who take that option. Secondly, why wasn't I told this on day one, which would have saved me the time, money and effort of making endless phonecalls to people who, frankly, didn't seem all that well acquainted with the vagaries of their own system.

Grrrrrr - so frustrating!
