Hi, just wondering if anyone can give me advice on sending a large sum of money from Australia to Ireland, whats the best way?as exchange is dropping need to do ASAP, also as have not lived in Ireland for last 2 years will I get taxed?
Thank you

Assuming that you are Irish domiciled whether you bring the money into Ireland does not change the tax status of the funds. A person who is ordinarily resident and ceases to be resident on account of days not spent in Ireland is not subject to tax in Ireland on employment and trade income where the employment or trade are wholly exercised outside of the country. All other types of income (except the first €3K) is liable to tax in Ireland until the individual ceases to be ordinarily resident unless excluded under the terms of a double tax treaty.

Bringing funds into Ireland is really only relevant where the remittance basis applies and this does not apply to Irish domiciled individuals.

To do an international transfer of funds from one country/currency to another there are several online services that save you a huge amount over regular bank transfer fees and poor exchange rates. Here are the ones I researched recently. I'm not sure which is best for Australia since I was more concerned with the USA and Ireland.

CurrencyFair
Transfermate
Transferwise.com
Xe.com
Currency.ie

I tried CurrencyFair which is based in Ireland and so far have experienced good customer service. Transfermate seems to be a well funded startup but they seem to be more EU centric so far. Check out each of their fees and how they calculate the exchange rate and which countries they support.

When you set up an account you likely have to send them photo ID and proof of address information as an anti-fraud measure which is required by law. So read the terms and sign up for the one that is right for you before you need to use it so you can jump on the optimal exchange rate.

+1 on Currency Fair have used them to send funds to Australia with no problems. Maybe do it in a couple of moves if you are concerned and see the first go through if it is a large amount. Pretty straight forward once set up..............reckon the exchange rate is going to keep going against you also
