Hi, We have been asked by our estate agent (who is selling our house) that they want either a copy of our passports or a copy of our driving licences along with a household bill. They say its has to do with money laundering laws. Is this correct?. If so, times have changed since we last moved 20years ago.

They are correct; I can't see this law stopping many criminals, but it is a relatively small inconvenience, so if it even stops a few, I suppose it would be no harm.

Hi guys, anybody providing a professional service that involves money is now legally obliged to obtain a copy of your passport and utility bill. It is a requirement of the Criminal Justice Act 2001. Have to agree i doubt it stops many criminals but im sure it serves its purpose somewhere i just dont know where!

A lot of money laundering in Ireland used to be via bank accounts in false names.
The obligation to show evidence that you are not using a false name when moving
money around, shuts off this avenue.
