Selling a 2nd hand car with a problem?

Our 2001 Nissan Almera needs to have the timing chain replaced - something that could cost about €1000. As it already has 110,000 miles on the clock, we're thinking of just trading it in without bothering doing the work ourselves. We could get some kind of deal if we traded it in here, apparently (approx. €1,500) but we're thinking of buying a car in the north - where they wouldn't be willing to take a southern car as a trade-in. If we do buy up north how would we go about selling a car down here that has an existing problem? We're obviously going to mention the timing chain problem, so will anyone still want it? Any recommendations? Should we just be looking for scrappage money for it at this stage?

Replacing a timing belt ( not a chain ) would be no where near 1000 euro. more like 200 to 300 euro all in. get another quote.

There is no way a timing belt or chain for a Nissan Almera could cost that much to replace. I had the timing belt replaced on a VW Passat TDI last year and it cost me 400. Whoever is giving you that quote is way off the beam.

Definitely get another quote on this. For yourself in selling privately nobody is going to want to buy a car that needs this replaced as they are not going to fork out money for it.
You are better off to get the whole car fully serviced and replace anything that needs replacing and you should be able to get more money for it.

It is a chain - Almeras have chains, not belts.

Get it sorted first as others have said, nobody will want it otherwise. If you don't use main dealer, and maybe know a nixer mechanic, it may only cost around €300 or so.

Fully agree with the idea that the chain should be replaced - why would someone take on your problem unless they got the car for a song... which will mean you don't need to worry about still having the car but you'll get next to nothing for it.

2001 is far too young an age at which to be considering scrapping a car - particularly if this is the only fault.

Take the advice of the other posters and take it round several different places to get a price for the chain. Stay away from Nissan dealerships... they will definitely not give you the best deal.
