Sealing gap under stud wall

Removed a fitted wardrobe and now find that there is an air gap between 2 rooms under the stud wall.

I can see a bit of light and there is a draught as dust has blown through from one side to the other.

Skirting has anything up to 4 or 5mm gap in places.

Not great for privacy or noise insulation.

Question is - what is the best way to fill the gap?

I don't want to lower the skirting as it would mean taking them off 2 rooms and refitting.

Can I stuff it with something and then caulk it / silicone it?

Expanding foam then silicone?

Floors are dark stained pine. Skirting is white painted wood.

Am thinking of giving it a good dose of silicone and finishing it off nicely with white silicone both sides. Might end up doing all 4 sides of each room to make it look right.

Any ideas please?

I'd go for the expanded foam and silicone seal. foam would give good sound insulation and silicone to finish

What about a white or pine strip of wooden quadrant to cover the gap? I'd avoid silicone like the plague after the builders of our place seemed to think that it was some sort of snag panacea and 13 years on we are still living with the consequences... :(

Hmm, I guess I *should* use a wooden bead but I hate those.

Silicone should be OK in this instance as it is cosmetic only, if it gets shabby over time it can be renewed. I know its not a panacea but I must admit I do tend to overuse it myself!

Use a strip of foam underlay (used under floating floors) as a "backer" to fill large gaps before filling with a mastic sealant. If you intend to redecorate the room or at least paint the skirtings you can fill the gap with a paintable mastic (RITO being one good product for this purpose), ordinary painter's caulk won't last the course if used near a floor. If you're worried about noise you could seal with an acoustic sealant- expanding foam type or mastic- but these are expensive and probably not worth the effort when a regular mastic will suffice.

Thanks! I was sold some Tec7 stuff today, I think its a paintable mastic - guess that will do the job?
