Scythe Mower

Has anyone used a Scythe Mower to cut ferns, if so how did it go. The ferns are now about 5 feet high. Also where might I find a second hand one, they seem to be few and far between.

You looking for an old-school scythe? A brush cutter would make much lighter work of it, these can be hired if you don't envisage using one often enough to justify the price.

Hi Leo. No not an old-school scythe - a scythe mower, like a lawn mower with hedge trimmer teeth low down.
It's too big for a brush cutter, I need something self propelled that will cut them low down and just pass on.
Scythe mower is the job!

Hi RedOnion, do you where I can inquire about buying 2nd hand from hire company - I know you can phone up the public number etc but is there an office that deals specifically with that?

Hi Leo, can you let me know how I can send a private message to someone, I'm still a new member and I've tried but nothing comes up on how I can send it.

You'd usually see hire companies advertising at the end of season, so it might be wrong time of the year. Anytime I've bought it's just contacting them directly, but I deal with a local branch of a large hire company.
You should also look at flail mowers - the benefit is they'll mulch to an extent as the cut.
Personally, if it's something you'd use, I'd look at a pedestrian (walk behind) tractor that takes different attachments, like a rotavator. But you're looking at over 2k for anything in decent condition.

Here's an example of what I'd have in mind. This is ex hire. Not a company I've dealt with so I'm not recommending.

For the avoidance of doubt, I'm not suggesting anyone travels hundreds of kilometres during a pandemic. This was posted as an example of a pedestrian tractor, and the price point you'd expect to pay for a 2nd hand one.

Don’t forget that some >>ferns<< (typo) contain carcinogens. I think it’s just at a certain time of year though. I’d recommend Googling it and making an educated decision.

I bought a Texas rotovator eight years ago for about a grand, new. Briggs abs Stratton engine. The wheels aren’t powered though. But it’s a great machine.
I waited until the retailer had their annual “no VAT sale” so that took a chunk off the price.

I think ferns are dangerous to animals when they first appear out of the ground if they are eaten, they have arsenic in them I believe, didn't think they would would be dangerous to cut. Will definitely google it.

New users aren't allowed to send PMs,you need to build up a number of posts. Also note the guideline #14 on contacting other posters.

We're gone off topic here @Drakon
As Interesting as a conversation about rotavators/tillers would be, I fail to see the relevance to the OPs questions??
