This paper on the "keyhole problem" affecting many computer and, in particular, (graphical) user interface systems makes for an interesting and amusing read. I'm sure that I am not the only person to have been frustrated by some of the issues raised by Scott Meyers here.

CM, I was just going to post the word "link" to highlight the fact theres no link in your post but Im unable to post anything less then 10 characters in the body of a message(live and learn). So will take this opportunity to post a link to mozillas stumbleupon addin which has recently taken up all my idle free surfing time...

[broken link removed]

and oh yeah, theres no link in your post :)

I lieu of reading the paper to see whether you knew the following anyway, AFAIR I think the main reason for the origin of keyholing was cognitive overload. ie, Too many choices displayed onscreen at once is ultimately inefficent as the average user spends longer trying to learn to navigate through the display then actually looking for their target, if you know what I mean.
