Santry

Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone has any opinions on Santry? I've always thought of it as a nice area, but looking at maps, it seems very close to Ballymun eg: Shanliss Way:

I don't have anything personal against Ballymun let me just say that, but it would be my personal preference not to live beside it as I heard there are still some problems in the area

The thing that appeals to me about Santry is the size of the houses, and most of them have garages with potential to extend, as well as massive back gardens. Can anyone from the area especially tell me what its like?

Santry is a pretty good little spot. There are lots of amenities, some ok schools and good transport links.

The Whitehall side is nice and has some great sized houses. The side closer to Omni park shopping centre is ok too...Ballymun trouble usually sticks to Ballymun and there can be trouble anywhere but the closer you are to Ballymun does affect the prices of houses.


There is definitely better value to be had than 3 years ago (350K as opposed to 750K), and some areas (lorcan springs to mind) is full of older people (70+) and so houses needing some renovation (i.e. cheaper) seem to be popping up as these people leave us.

Santry is a good area, would you also think of Collins Ave, the Santry end.

I'd be fairly open to any part of Santry, I do like the Collins Ave end and Lorcan is also a nice area. The thing that stuck out about the ballymun end were the prices for the size of house you get. An alerm bell went off a while back though when looking on daft at photos from one in Shanliss I think it was, of the back garden, where directly overlooking were the new apartments in Shangan. I also see there is a link road between Shanliss and Coultry, which made me guess Shanliss is almost part of Ballymun now - I may be totally wrong on that though.

I've got a few questions I'm hoping you can help with:
- Are there any Gaelscoils in or near Santry?
- I see most of the big houses were built in the 60's - would there be much work needing to be done on them if they havent been recently renovated? ie. rewiring, insulation, etc.
- Any buses go through the estates Shanowen, Shanliss, Lorcan?
- Most seem to have garages and lots of garden space to extend - are there many extensions to be seen when you walk through the area? Planning permission a problem?

I would be very careful about estate agents calling places Santry, when they are indeed Ballymun...

I seem to remember some glasnevin residents fighting to change their post codes a few years back.

No matter how liberal you are, Ballymun is classed as a rough area to most people and there is usually a reason why a house would appear good value...Especially if it backs on to shangan.

Incidentally, shangan will be knocked eventually, I think Shangan 5 is gone or going soon.

- Bus: 16, 16A, 33, 33B, 41, 41B, 41C, 103, 104, 746

I don't think that planning will be a problem unless you have rotten neighbours who are members of the council planning dept. Every corner plot has already been built on so I can#'t see a small extension being a bother.

I'd say that a re-wire might be probably but other than decoration, they should be in failry good shape.

Getting one needing enough work that means that you can add value, might be harder though.

No idea about Gaelscoils, although I think there is one on the Malahide road which isn't too far

If you are worried about Ballymun try veer over towards Lorcan part of santry and maybe beaumont as well. both of these areas have every conceivable amenity and I think there is a gaelscoil in whitehall and santry as well but would not know the exact locations of either.

Shanliss

I have lived on Shanliss Road for the last 10 years and I can only say good things about it. Good bus service, either on 16 through Shanliss, 13, 4 on the Ballymun road or 16A, 41, 33 etc on old airport road end.
Neighbours are lovely. Houses are solid and gardens are a good size.
I must say before I lived there I might have bawked at the closeness to Ballymun, but it has not once been an issue.

my parents live in the lorcan area of santry, its the part of sanrty that got cut ff by the motorway! and i grew up there. great area, really quiet. I walked to both my schools, and there's a range of buses close by, as well as omni and northdside shopping centre.
