Hi All,
Found a gorgeous island that we're thinking of heading to for holidays in May. Although I can't seem to find a convenient (nor inexpensive) way to get there.

Anyone been to Santorini before? How did you get there?

Any opinions on santoniri as a location also appreciated.

If that's Santorini near Crete, then check out the cost of a local flight or ferry from Crete. I don't know of any direct flights.

Direct flights and package holidays here www.XL.com never been there myself but a work mate was and thought it was lovely, mainly because it was quiet and uncommercialised. let us know how you go.

We visited there many moons ago and got a ferry from Crete. It was beautiful then, would go back in a flash!

You can also get a ferry or hydrofoil from Athens. The island is beautiful and the sunsets are incredible!

thanks for the comments.

After looking into it a little more. We're thinking of flying to athens, stay the night. Then hopping to one or two islands (Naxos & Mykonas/Ios) before spending a week in Santorini. Maybe back to athens then for one night and flying home.

Few questions.
How long does it take to get from Santorini to athens on a ferry?
Anyone opinions on the islands Naxos, Mykonas, Ios?
Is it worth spending 2 days in Athens? much to see there?
What are the tempatures like around end april beginning May? Websites say 19 degrees celsius but I thought it would be higher?

River - I presume you are in your early 20's if you are contemplating ios.

Also going to Santorini in May and doing the same, flying to Athens and spending a couple of nights there before flying to Santorini with Aegean Airlines. The Athens-Santorini flights were about €80 or so. The XL flights also look like a good option but they only fly Tuesdays so that didn't suit me.

I was in IOS in my early 20's and would not go there unless you are in to partying until the small hours - there is not much else to do there. I went to Paros which is a lovely island. Most of the islands "near" Athens are party islands, Paros, Naxos and Ios - Mykonos is very popular with the gay scene.

Santorini is a beautiful Island and if you can go by ferry do as the scenery when you arrive is spectacular. It is perched high on a cliff.

You could easily spend two days in Athens. Musts are the Archeological Museum, the Olympic Stadium, The Acropolis and the Monastery on top of the hill which is reached via a funicular railway. (As you've probably guessed I've forgotton the name.) A ramble round the centre using a cheap guide book will give you loads more places. If that's not enough, you can get a bus to the Temple of the Winds which is stunning.

Xl now fly direct to mykonos another beautiful island you can get a ferry from there, I dunnit in the 80's when I was young and goodlookin! most of the islands are very nice although I hear are now quite expensive towards then. santorini is paticularly nice marble streets etc enjoy yourself have some souvlaki for me......

I believe it's called Lykavittos Hill - particularly nice at sunset when you can see the sun setting behind the Acropolis into the Aegean - There's the funicular and it's an easy enough walk up as well.

Athens is certainly worth a few days - It used to have a terrible reputation for traffic and pollution, but that's been cleaned up an awful lot now and is quite a pleasant city to spend a few days in.
