How come you didn't get a raise, if you don't mind me asking?
Did you ask for a raise?
I have always made a point of asking for a raise, when I am with a company one year, then every year after that. I feel I need a raise to keep up with inflation. Any raise less than 3 or 4% and you are working for less money (i.e. you were better off 2 yrs ago, as your money went further).
When I asked for a raise 2 years ago, the owner said that he hadn't provided for this in the budget!!! Did he think I would work for the same money for 2 or 3 years. I said that I would need an annual raise, to at least keep pace with inflation?? Then he had the cheek to wonder why I was leaving, when I handed in my notice last year.
In my opinion, particularly in small companies, you will rarely be offered a raise in salary. They wait for you to ask, and if you don't ask, that is X amount saved for them. Why should they give an increase as long as they are getting the work done cheaply. The annoying thing is, that if you leave because of low salary, the very same employers will not be able to find someone else to work for the same money so they will offer a new employee the same money as you, if not more.
It is nearly better to ask for a raise every year. If you wait 2 yrs before asking for a raise, you will probably get a bit less than if you ask every year, as the increase will look too big. Little and often is better.
