Salary negotiation opportunity

Interesting situation. I'm starting a new internal position requiring me to build a team from scratch, and therefore hire several direct reports.

One of the management roles reporting into me is being filled an existing employee, whose current salary will be higher than my own. I see this is a useful opportunity. The person in question has good experience but my own experience / knowledge easily trumps theirs. Indeed I would be hard to replace, at least at the moment, while the team and those I am hiring are new.

Have any of you been in this position before, and if so, would you have any advice?

The best time to negotiate is before you start the role. You raise it with your line manager. “Now that I am going to be building my team and bringing x & y experience to the company what were you considering in terms of salary for this new position?” I am sure it will be all bluster, great opportunity, new experience, blah blah but you are in a strong position. You have the skills they need, buying in those skills would cost them more in time effort & money. You can list market rate for your position, I would not compare your value to you direct reports, as much, as to your peers in other organisations.

Also look for perks like an individual career coach to assist with strategy and personal development. Best of luck.

The company is being reorganised. My scope of work and thus position are transferring to a new department, this is out of my hands. I'm pleased though, I get to build my own team within this department and am reporting into a someone I respect. Ignore the salary for a moment, it's a great opportunity, and ultimately will make more employable.

I expect my manager will proactively take steps to address the situation however I don't want to leave this to chance. I plan to point out the obvious to them, the question I'm toying with is how far I push it.

push it beyond what you would settle for, they will feel the need to negotiate you down a bit, but my experience has always been if you dont ask you dont get, so make sure you ask!
