Ryanair don't require ID for children under 16 travelling with a parent. What I would suggest you do and it will suffice is get a copy of your sons birth cert and staple a passport size photo to it. This covers all angles and prevents some worries in relation to child trafficking.

just got back from my trip to england. just carried my own passport and a birth cert for my son, no hassle at all. thanks for replies
