Ryanair and cancelled flights

I was flying back from Spain a few days ago with Ryanair and the flight was cancelled beause of fog (which lifted after about an hour and a half as it turned out). The alternatives offered to us (and scores of others) were not acceptable, e.g., flying two or three days later from locations hundreds of kilometres away. My sister and I had to go to another city and spend the guts of EU600 on two Aer Lingus flights the following day. Ryanair advised that compensation was available under EU legislation. Would I be wasting my time?

You might want to start here and also check your travel insurance in case that covers you for something.
