17 Oct 2017: RTÉ is looking for new members of the RTÉ Audience Council to help us understand how to best serve the needs of our diverse audiences

Would you like to be part of this engaged and active team of volunteers?

What’s the RTÉ Audience Council?

The RTÉ Audience Council actively listens to our audience’s views on RTÉ programmes and our public service remit and advises the RTÉ Board on its findings.

RTÉ welcomes all contact from its viewers and listeners and the RTÉ Audience Council acts as an additional link between the audience and the RTÉ Board.

The RTÉ Audience Council has 15 voluntary* members representing a cross-section of Irish society. Members are selected and appointed by the RTÉ Board, which also appoints one of its members as Chair of the council.

Membership is an unpaid position with a maximum term of five years. Reasonable vouched out-of-pocket expenses relating to the work of the AC may be reimbursed Most members will only serve 18 to 24 month terms but some may serve the full five year term.

The RTÉ Board needs a new council to replace the former RTÉ Audience Council, whose term will expire at the end of this year.

What might I be asked to do?

If you’re selected as a member of the RTÉ Audience Council you may be asked to:

  • Assist and report to the RTÉ Board
  • Attend regularly scheduled meetings
  • Listen to the views of members of the public at events and through public submissions, surveys, focus groups, social media, etc.

  • Operate as part of a confidential group
  • Attend RTÉ public listening events
  • Contribute your ideas, opinions and expertise
  • Attend events on behalf of the council (special RTÉ screenings, conferences, music events)
Do we have assistance with research and reporting?

Yes, the Board’s representative, who is Chair of the RTÉ Audience Council works closely with the Secretary to the Audience Council will attend all meetings, take notes and help you create documents and presentations to submit to the Board. Speakers from RTÉ will also give talks and provide answers and advice. Some funding may also be available from time to time to commission professional research reports, surveys or focus groups.

What qualifications do I need?

No qualifications are needed. You just need to be interested in public service broadcasting and in assisting the Board in understanding the needs and views of RTÉ’s audience. You should be a good listener, respect other’s views and opinions (even if you do not share them) and have strong communication skills. Academic experience or an understanding of research processes are helpful. Experience of volunteering within a group or community, and working with members of the public, is also an asset.

Who should not apply?

If you are paid to represent an organisation or a particular interest (PR, lobbyists, special interest groups) please do not apply for membership.

Why does RTÉ have an Audience Council?

It exists to help the Board better understand its audience’s needs. The RTÉ Audience Council is also a requirement of the Broadcasting Act 2009 (S.96)

What’s the time commitment?

Regularly scheduled meetings in Donnybrook, Dublin 4, which are two to three hours in duration. There may be additional time required occasionally to compile reports or presentations and to attend events. In 2016 there have been 4 meetings with 3 more planned to the end of the year.

Why should I become a member?

This position is an opportunity to help Ireland’s national broadcaster in understanding how to best meet the needs of its audience. As a member you will be helping RTÉ to fulfil its public service remit.
