I just got an email today from DCC to say ive been offered an apartment in Ashtown, am so excited, just scurrying around to get mortgage in principle, anyone else get offered there?
The viewing is in about 2 weeks, so have to somehow get deposit together, and few other things they are asking me to do. I heard some things about the area, some anti-social ness and so on, hoping not as ive been waiting 2 years on the affordable housing to get offered a place to I'll literally take anywhere.

I got the same email alright. It also state that it's a first come first served basis so you may have to be there early.

Yeah its supposed to be Fingal, but guess theyre trying to get rid of them, id read on the net that there is a backlog of 300 houses they are trying to get rid of as the banks/developers end up paying huge amounts on bridging loans each month. I'm going to Royal Canal today to suss the area out to see if its somewhere id want to live.

Hope all goes well, id read some other forum on boards about the place and some mixed reviews, such as mayhem traffic, flooding and so forth so have some concerns, also at the viewing need to ask if we can make alterations to the propery and also if theres some Service charge we need to pay for the apartment each year.

Hi Trevorku,
I dont want to rain on your parade as you're obviously excited about the offer but check out the asking price and the claw-back. There are numerous posts from people who bought an AH property in RCP and the asking price on the open market is nearly the same as the AH price paid.

I was offered one myself last Summer but decided not to go for it, at the time I think the DCC asking price was 210k.
So look before you leap!
Best of luck,
FTB1975

yea i was offered one in Royal Canal Park too back last summer - great fun picking it, i was first on the list and did the snag immediately then did hear anything from them, was ringing and ringing, until February this year. I had got a second valuation done because the price had gone down and they wouldnt change it. In the end I am now buying privately now still in Ashtown I dont think its worth getting into the Affordable Housing and the clawback in this climate I didnt think so and they take so long - - - - in the end when i pulled out they offered to reduce price but wouldnt get rid of clawback

apartments are lovely though finished nicely - but where in normal apartments there is an onsuite in the Dublin City ones there is a big storage press there or something but they are lovely

I've been looking on Daft to try and get photos and saw some floor plans but guess ill have to wait and see next Saturday, thats when the viewing is.

The funny thing is the property is Dublin 15 so should actually be listed as being under Fingal County Council, but I only applied for Dublin City council, have you applied for the affordable housing scheme already? If not then you could be in for long wait, I've been waiting 2 years to be offered but some people are lucky and offered within few months.

The only people who will be offered the apartments at the moment would be the people emailed from the Affordable Housing unit last week, but actually the private sale market is almost equal to the prices on Affordable Housing so if you got 92% mortgage off the bank you could actually afford them too.

Hi Trevor

Yes ive been approved by Fingal for just over a month now and have recently applied to DCC. Ideal scenario for me would be to stay around Dublin 15, Ashtown would be perfect for me,close to work, family and friends.

Let me know how you get on with the viewing anyway!

Dont see why you cant come along and view the apartments too, theres no appointment as such, apparently there will be signs or posters there nearby
and thats what ive been told is the directions on how to get there, you should be able to just walk in and view, if they say anything just say that you were passing and saw the signs and just wanted a peek in, the worst they can do is ask you to leave :)

It would be ideal for me workwise too as im working in an un-named insurance company near Blanch S.C. :) so could even cycle to work almost. Am just concerned as ive 7 month old son, and apartment is not ideal but the only other offer would be houses on Clifden road, Dublin 10 and lets just say the locals wouldnt be my cup of tea, bit rough in that area to be honest.

I've had a talk to my gf and we decided if the 3 bed in Ashtown is good enough then we will make an offer on the way hopefully.

I think i work for that same un-named insurance company in Blanch so can definitely see how the location would suit. Might pop down and have a look anyway, nothing to lose i guess!

Yeah sure pop down what do you have to lose, think ill sneak some pics on my phone when im there, size it up and so on. I'll keep you informed on how the viewing goes on Saturday, take care fellow QDI-er.
