My father loves Rovers. I don't know why, guess it must be that old man styling!

He is on his 5th one now (2 x 213, 1 x 214, 1 x 400 and 1x 45) all bought from new. I have seen 2 low mileage '05 1.8 petrol ones on Carzone.ie for €13,750.

Does anyone have anything to say about these cars? What are they like for reliability? Will it be easy to get parts now that they are gone belly up?

Any input appreciated!

I would not buy the 1.8 petrol there is a reason they are cheap. Problem with head gasket blowing.

I had a diesel 2.0cdt rover 75 which my brother is still driving. It has the BMW diesel engine. Top class car very relaible has over 150000miles on it and no real issues. Had to put a pump in it once. Cost €200. Very comfortable 45mpg.

Parts i dont think will be an issue, They could come back into production.

Regards

Denis

I read on honestjohn.co.uk and whatcar.co.uk that the head gasket is a problem due to the small coolant tank which empties very quikly if there is even a small leak.

Is this the head gasket problem you are referring to? Surely regular servicing will ensure this shouldn't happen. My father is retired and is only doing a couple of thousand miles a year, so probably wouldn't justify buying a diesel?

I dont think servicing will cover it. Seen to many people having problems with the 1.8 engine in both 75 and freelander. Again this is the reason for their cheap price. If you can buy a diesel with higher miles with a lower price i would go for that but that is just my opinion

Many Rovers have problems with head gaskets - I've had a mate with a Rover 414 (I Think), as well as the Rover 200 (this requried a replacement engine) - both smaller cars. Explanation by mechanic was due to the type of gasket - I thinks it's stainless steel, but maybe someone with more specialist knowledge can elaborate. Don't touch a Rover with a Rover engine!!

As other posters said, BMW engines, or older 614's with Honda engines are the only ones for reliability.

That may very well be but the BBC Watchdog programme ran a feature where Rover recalled Freelanders to have a newly designed head gasket fitted to the 1.8 petrol engines and some of the dealers fitted the old gasket, which blew afterwards anyway.

I'd still suggest steering clear of the 1.8, and look for a Japenese or German engined model, if it has to be a Rover.

Is it specifically the 1.8 litre version of the rover k-series engine allegedly has head gasket problems or is it all K series engines?

I ask this because as I said before, my father is currently on his 5th rover and the last 2 for definite (1.6l rover 45 and 1.4l rover 400) both have rover k engines, neither of which has given him a days trouble!

Is he just one of the lucky ones or have the ones who have had problems been the unlucky ones?
