any one know about rover 400 is it a reliable car i need to change my car and i have been given a loan of a garage car rover 400 while the garage is looking at my car the garage owner says it is for sale and it looks nice and the price is good has any one had any experience with them

Hi,

A friend of mine bought one new in 1999 and he never had an ounce of trouble.

I think the Rover company went bust and they have been bought over by some Chinese company. There may be a problem sourcing parts.

Also when you go to sell it you are going to have a hell of a job.

No parts problems whatsoever for the forseeable future but there is undoubtably an image problem with second hand rovers.

Bear in mind garage 'loaner' cars probably get more abuse and even less care than any other car around. You'd want to be getting a spectacular deal and a comprehensive warranty to even consider it.

It's not exactly the worst car out there but depending on your budget i'd almost guarantee there's better.

Had a Rover 45 (new model 400) for a few years never had a ounce of bother with it always started on the button my father now has it and is very happy with it, overall I reckon the 400 would be a good buy at the right price try and get a 45 though there are some really cheap bargains out there. Parts will not be a problem for at least ten years the other good news is that the company who bought MG/Rover took a 33 year lease out on the Longbridge plant with the intention of taking back some of the work force to start production again.

Check HonestJohn for more info

And your advice is based on.....

based on............2 of my brothers owning in total 3 rovers including a ZR.rovers are a laughing stock in the car market..........go to a garage with a rover as a trade in and watch the faces:eek: .expereience speaks for itself!

I'm with XMan on this - I've had two Rover engines blow a head gasket on me - one was in a 416i and the other in a Freelander - avoid like a sneezing chicken!

speak to people who know cars.......don't ask the dealers cause they will sell their mother if its a profit,INSTEAD ask the mechanics these guys fix the problems and they will tell you the truth.

ok that all looks as if i should run a mile i asked two rover owners both never had a problem but they did tell me no trade in value one of them is keeping on to the car as they could not get a garage to accept rover as a trade in

coleen, ask yourself why is the trade-in value bad.

Because of the name, little more. Much in the same way as there are still those out there who wouldn't dream of buying a skoda.

Like most cars Rovers, well maintained, are fine.

Frankly the whole anti-Rover thing smacks a lot more of anti-British sentiment than anything based in reality.

Coleen, I'd suggest finding out what kind of engine your loaner 400 has under the bonnet before abandoning the idea completely.

Some of the late '90s 400 series (including my 420 Gsi) have Honda engines. Absolutely brilliant drive for the money I paid for it. No gasket or other problems, and doesn't leak as much as a drop of oil.

If it doesn't have a Honda engine, I don't know, but I'd be inclined to avoid.

Bullpoo....a number of people in this post have given concrete examples of failures with Rover cars - the issue with Rover K Series engines blowing Head Gaskets is well known in the industry and is down to the incorrect materials being used in the manufactoring of the engine head - Despite 1,000's of examples of engines blowing Rover never admitted the fault lay in their design.

edit: Removed potentially offensive remark
