Roof Tiles

We are doing an extension - extending dining and kitchen area into one open plan room about 48 sq m in total - the new area will have two peaked roofs with velux windows. Walls were completed last week and roof being prepared.
- builder told us yesterday, that he had costed in tiles on the roof of main house which are standard tile (dont know type). He is recommending that we use Shingles tiles on the roof which are smaller and more labour involved to put them up (these are used to the front of the house iover office).
He is quoting us an extra €3500 for these tiles, said they are 3 times more than the ones he had costed but they will look much better than the bigger one.
Does anyone know if this price is acurate ?
Or does anyone know of an alternative type of tile that is less expensive?
Appreciate your comments - thanks

The "shingle" type tiles are very nice, you see them used a lot in Britain, there use here is more often confined to smaller roof areas like porches etc, where a larger tile wouldn't look right. There is a "3 in 1" concrete tile (Condron Concrete do them, I'm sure Lagan and the rest do a similiar product) available, it's basicaly a plain tile which is "ruled" or moulded and when on the roof it gives the appearance of a small "shingles". Ask your builder to get you a sample.

Thanks Carpenter for the reply, really appreciate it will talk with builder in the morning

Find out the exact type/brand of tile he is planning to use and then get on the phone to suppliers and ask how much they are. This will give you a rough idea on prices. Also your builder will be buying them at a wholesale price.
