Roof box for the car?

Going over to England in the summer and thought we might need a roof box to take the extra stuff we'll take.
I drive a Golf 96, my son said it's a CL mark 3????
Do I need a roof rack on the car first?
Don't know a thing about any of this so any information would be great.

For instance how much should I have to pay for a roof box/rack? Do you have to get then fitted?

Get THULE roof-bars in any good car accessory shop. You can attach any roof box to them.

Last year, I bought roof bars from micksgarage.ie for €125, then got a 420L roof box second hand off buy & sell for €140.00 - box is in very good condition.
 
I purchased a Thule rack and a Hapro ProBox online from the Roofbox Warehouse in the U.K. two year's ago - [broken link removed] I saved a bit of money and found them very helpful and efficient. They ship to Ireland.
