Can anybody recommended as good hotel in Rome close to the vatican which is not outrageously priced or a dated dump?
Or and other accomadation alternative?

I found it hard to source a good hotel at a decent price. Eventually found Hotel Santa Maria (http://www.htlsantamaria.com/english/index.htm) on tripadvisor.com.

Was very friendly, good value and great breakfast. About 30 min walk along the tiber to the Vatican. It's also based in Trastavere, great for reasonably priced Trattorias.

Someone else might have firsthand knowledge for you. HTH

Just back from 4 days in rome and we stayed at the dei mellini hotel which is about 5-10 minutes walk to the Vatican and all the sights. Walked everywhere while we were there and didn't need to use public transport ...though we met people who did and found it fine.
The reception at the hotel wre very helpful in recommending restaurants and all their recommendations were great. We paid 160 euro for a double room per night including buffet brreakfast which was very good. Would definately recommend this hotel.

Look at what they say on tripadvisor. Have not posted my review of the hotel on there yet but will shortly....
