My mother recently died and her will leaves me and her solicitor as joint executors and trustees. Her solicitor has quoted a fee of 1.5% of the gross estate, plus VAT , plus costs. The estate mainly consists of a house which I believe to be worth about €1.5m. The solicitor will therefore get around €24,000 plus VAT. I have got quotes from other solicitors to do the same job for a fixed fee of around €2,750 plus VAT and costs. My question is am I stuck with my mother's solicitor as he is a joint Executor of the will or can I say as Trustees and Executors it is our job (his and mine) to get the best value for my mothers estate and as such we should get a better value solicitor. I would welcome peoples views, especially if you have a legal background.
