Right of Residence / Claim on estate

Two questions:

1. Does anyone know whether a right of residence (for life) can be altered / affected if the person who has a right of residence owns another residence, but doesn't live in the house they own?

2. A will prepared in the late sixties by my grandfather (a farmer) left his estate equally between all his sons and daughters with the eldest son farming the land. This has meant that when farming the land he has to get the other siblings to "sign off" a parcel of land where he wants to sell it or gift it. Does this sound correct? Is there any time principle around this i.e. would it potentially lapse after a period of time?

Thanks.

1. Depends on the wording but quite possibly not.

2. Depends on the wording, the circumstances and the acts carried out by the farmer and his family.

Legal advice relevant to the particular circumstances required on both.
