Rewiring of house question

Hi

I had a house completely rewired in 2000 and received cert of completion for the work.

I am in the process of renovating the house and a different electrician called to cut off electricity and do a general check up. He told me that the original rewiring was done by joining new wires to the old ones.

Is this acceptable practice? I am concerned because the electrician I employed in 2000 is still working. I know it is too late for me to do anything about the work he did for me but I am concerned this might happen to someone else if this type of work is dangerous.

If you had the house totally rewired in 2000 and he didnt use new cable completely throughout the house then this is totally unacceptable.. It can be very dangerous depending on when the house had been previously been wired.. I've rewired houses were the wiring had been 60 years old!! If this is the case here, your wiring is in serious trouble as the wiring years ago wasnt suitable for the high powered appliances we have today..
 
If this the case that new wiring has been connected to old it is a very serious situation, why rewire the at all house if leaving some old wiring in circuit. In the description of work on the completion certificate does it state "Re Wire" if so its an invalid certificate. As an electrical safety inspector I have come across this a few times. I would report this to RECI/ECSSA depending which body he is a member of.
 
Yes you should get that fixed. I had an old fuse box and just wanted to get a new one, thinking the wiring was ok since the house had been sold as "rewired". The electrician came and said there was old and new wiring mixed and this was totally unsuitable. He ended up completely rewiring the entire house as trying to fix the mess could have created even more problems. I then received a Reiki Cert for the work done. So whatever Cert you have, you should follow up with them as suggested.

Thanks for your responses. I phone RECI today. They were quite snotty and told me they only dealt with queries regarding to jobs that were 3 years old or less. The person I spoke to sounded as if she was asleep and went on about not being able to take the electrician's livelihood away.


I guess RECI are not serious about this business-anyone else have experience of them??

RECI are legally responsible,threaten them with a solicitor and demand their inspector comes out immediately.
 
If RECI are not willing to take up your complaint you should contact the Commission for Energy Regulation (CER) who oversee the work that they do.
 
Reci will send out an inspector if you are willing to pay , but seeing as this job was done eight years ago you are going to find it hard to go back that far & decide who is responsible for what. Even the revenue commissioners only expect records to be kept for 6 years. There have been various changes to the regulations since 2000, again the inspector can only assume or guess as to what was obligitory then. Are you just talking about the cables at the ESB meter location or are you talking about cables throughout the house

Yes cabling throughout the house.

The advice I have been given is that there is nothing at all I can do as the work was done 8 years ago.

It has been an expensive lesson

reci are only responsible for electricians who are registered with reci. the other group ecssa are only responsible for electricians registered with ecssa.
