Revolut RevPoints Deposits

Another aspect of this is the 'rebate value'.

If you book a hotel inside the Revolut app you can pay a part of the price with Revpoints. The conversion rate of those Revpoints are only fair as long as the rebate is not bigger than 20%. The moment you chose more Revpoints you get a terrible deal like 333 Revpoints for 1 euro rebate. Whilst until 20% you get roughly 20-25 euro rebate for 1000 revpoints.

i.e. It is misleading to say that Revolut give you 5,400 EUR off hotels if you save 100,000 EUR for a year. They will in fact give you the first 20% off via rewards BUT the rates for hotels via Revolut are often 10-20% more than what you can get via Google Travel. So they give you 20% off that you could potentially have got elsewhere and they screw you if you want to pay via points for more than 20% of the hotel stay. i.e. Bit of a scam.

@Tea-eis - I guess that this rebate issue does not apply to the miles offer?

Correct, it doesn't apply in that way - the points are converted 1:1 into airmiles and deposited into whatever airline programme you request.

However you're then subject to that airlines airmiles rules. As Gordon Gecko pointed out, if you use them for cash discounts, you get appalling value (similar to to the problem with Revolut Hotels you pointed out). Unlike Revolut hotels though, if you use them for the purpose they are intended for and trade them for Reward Flights (ie not cash discounts), it's possible to get fantastic value. The usual range quoted for Avios is to get around 0.8c - 3c of value per Avios. It's hard to put a cash value on them in that range though as it will depend on where you want to go, when, and what travel class.

If you're looking to update the best buys, it might just be more useful to note they can be transferred to airlines at a 1:1 ratio with no limit. If someone travels regularly with airmiles they'll know for themselves what they're worth to them. For many (but not all), it will be a fantastic deal

For anyone wondering about speed, I transferred Revolut points into Avois yesterday and they are in my Aer Lingus account this morning.
Can i ask - once the revpoints (which i think expire after 3 yrs) are converted to avios points, how long before they expire?

My observation is the relative value that this Revpoints thing actually gives me. I use Revolut for pretty much all my day to day expenditure and have the metal plan which costs me €15.99 a month. My monthly cashback used to more or less cover the cost (the cashback was capped at the monthly fee). But in the last couple of months I’ve accumulated about 30,000 points which is giving me €170 off a flight that I was going to buy anyway.

The rules are different for each airline frequent flyer programme. For Aer Lingus, they expire after 3 years of no account activity.

If you haven't already, recommend taking a look at rewards.aerlingus.com to see can you buy that seat as a reward flight instead of using the points for a discount on a full-price ticket. If they have reward seats on the day you want to fly, it should better value than using them for a discount.

Thanks. Didn’t even know about that!

I want to thank Tea-eis and the other contributors for this thread. I was reading it on my balcony in Portugal but couldn't get my head around it. Now having re-read it, with the rain battering the window here, in Ireland, it makes perfect sense and has opened up some appealing possibilities. Thanks again!!

With the upcoming reductions in Revolut interest rates, and probably further cuts down the road, this will become a more interesting proposal.

I think so. I'm really keen to throw some money into it as I can't see any other option that give me anything close to the value of the RevPoints, but I just have so many fears about Revolut's awful reputation for protecting their customers. I see I can turn on a selfie verification to withdraw for cash held in Pockets, but don't know if I'm confident that's even enough

But what woukd be your plan to use points? Just airline points? Are revpoints then really only good for those that fly a lot?

For me, it would just be for flying, particularly ultra-long haul business class, which is where the sweetest spot is for air miles. Air miles are hard to come by in Ireland relative to other countries, so this is quite a unique proposition in this market.

I struggle to see much value for RevPoints outside of flights, at least for me.

Can I ask you Tar Eis, what would 30k RevPoints equate to in airmiles/flights? AerLingus is 1 of the airlines thats listed which is good.

Not the OP, but only yesterday I checked a one-way flight to Venice for next September and it was 6,500 avios plus taxes and charges. On Skyscanner, it was €148.

Revolut logically might decrease Pocket rewards in tandem with interest rate decreases because Revolut will be earning less with the deposits and therefore have less scope to pay rewards.

a few pointers that might help:
Aer Lingus:
round trip economy to North America 26-33k Avios + €200ish taxes
Upgrade most economy transatlantic to business one way 37-45k Avios, no fees

Qatar
Round trip Dublin to most anywhere in pacific via Doha: 90k economy / 180k business +200ish taxes

Ba
Dublin - uk usually 10k Avios round trip in economy + 40 euro charges

Just a few examples that I’ve used them for in the past. Google “avios redemption sweet spots” and you’ll find quite a few good ideas.

Availability is often tight, particularly for business and first class, but if you’re only looking for one or two seats and can be flexible, you can find great value. Long haul is where the best value is as short haul is so competitive that the cash prices are often not much more than the value of the Avios required.

Avios flights exist in a parallel universe to cash flights, so sometimes there’s great value, sometimes it’s not really a bargain, so always need to compare the options

As Tea-eis says, taxes and fees on top.
Above graphic for reward flights, not for upgrades.
