If i was him i would not tell the social, unless he feels he has to, he is planing on going back in a year or he may be refused on the grounds of non habitual resident.
The OP says he was working up to when he left and he was on a one-year visa; he may have contributions in 2008 to qualify for JB.He will not be entitled to benefit as it is based on his stamps in the previous year of which he has none. If he has been gone for a year then he needs to take care not to get caught in the habitual residency rules check out the welfare website.
