returning to do leaving cert - advice

I have a friend in his forties who wants to do his leaving cert. Did it in the 80's and got 4 subjects. He is working fulltime, does nights. Have googled a bit but to be honest it is confusing as to what is out there. Most of it applies to people who are unemployed. It would probably suit him to attend classes in the afternoons and do a bit at home himself. He would also want to do it in one year. Anyone have an advice to offer including costs? I looked at the likes of kilroy college which does distance learning but it is 425 per subject which is quite dear.

Why does he want to do it? as a mature student it would seem pointless, as he could gain entry to college via the access route, or else do a more appropriate vocational level 5 or 6 course.
