returning stuff bought online

I received goods that were bought online and have sent the product back to the merchant. However, they now tell me that it will take 2-3 weeks, plus another week for delivery before they send the goods back to me.

Is there anything I can do? They say that they have to send the product to their testing department in Holland ? Is there some right to cancel if you do it immediately ? Ideally, I just want them to send the replacement without having to wait until they have checked the current item.

Should I contact my CC company and see what they say ? Another issue is that the product was part of a larger order, so I would presumably have to send it all back if I cancelled payment (can I cancel just the one item?).

The reason why you are returning the goods may be a factor. If you are complaining that they are faulty, then this will need to be verified by the company, or, if you just don't like the goods then they will also have to be checked before resale. In these and some other scenarios the approach of the company may not be unreasonable.

I think it is going to depend on the returns policy of the company involved. I returned a faulty CD to play.com before, like that they sent it for testing before sending me a new version.

The product was faulty when I received it.

My problem isn't that they have to look at the goods, my problem is that they are taking so long to do it. If they had an office in Dublin (where their returns address is), then I would have no problem, but still 2-3 weeks is way to long. They just have to turn the monitor on and look at the screen.

Anyway, looks like there isn't much I can do. There doesn't even seem to be a time limit before they had to send the replacement.
