Returned Faulty Product - Company hasn't received it.

Hello,

I am lost on this one, searched the An Post website for info but didnt find anything.

Basically a family member purchased an item online at Christmas. In April the product was showing faults, this was no problem as the company they bought it from just asked for it to be returned and they would send it on to the manufacturer for repair.

They posted off the item at the end of April, and phoned today for an update, only to be told it was never received. My relative had got a receipt from An Post but unfortunately she never understood that she would need to get it tracked also.

The annoying thing is the item was saved up for over a year as a present for their grandchild, and it worth around 400Euro which is an awful lot to them. I feel so sorry for them.

Can anyone be held accountable for the loss? Maybe the company did receive it back? Maybe An Post lost it?

Any advice, I would be extremely grateful and I know they would too.

Thanks

G

If by receipt you mean it was registered then you are entitled to make a claim against An Post's insurance.

Hi,

No it was not a registered parcel. They just sent the parcel and asked for a receipt thinking the barcode at the end was their tracking number.

Thanks for the link Charlie, although I notice they say you can not get compensation on standard post. A real pity and awful that in reality standard post should come with a warning. 'We WILL most likely lose or steal your post'. Even more of a pity that you can do nothing about it, you paid for a service and ended up far worse off because of it.

Small claims court maybe?

if it was a parcel with a barcode can you not trace it on the an post website? the barcode number will be on the receipt.

Just rang my relative earlier. She just went into the post office, handed the addressed parcel to the staff member and the staff member said, €3.70 please, no options given. So my relative being naieve with the postal system said 'Can I get a receipt with that please'. It turns out the receipt has a reference, but that it is not the 'trackable' type. I am raging at this.

I also rang the company the goods were being returned to just to ask whether this happens often, as many people around me have suggested that because the name of the company was a dead giveaway of what was actually in the parcel the light fingered people involved in the transit of parcels could simply take it. The company did confirm that parcels have gone missing. I know it might seem presumptious, but how else would a package that you hand in and pay for it to be delivered end up 'missing'.

An Post should have posters in clear view that unregistered post is not safe, or at least have their staff give out the options to consumers.

Sorry for getting hot under the collar, but it really has annoyed me and my relatives are sick over it.

Thanks

Ordered brake pads for motorbike from the UK and still had not received anything after 2 weeks. Called the company and very nicely they shipped me another set of pads that i received within days.
About one month later the first parcel was delivered, so i returned this one to the company as i had already got the replacement set by this stage

All of that to say it sometimes take a long while for things to be delivered.

Hi,
Wouldn't you think that if you pay money to have a Letter/parcel delivered to a certain address that it is a contract in itself?
Regards,
Horse

I don't want to be harsh, but I guess that having An Post staff give out a pile of options to every customer would be a PITA (pain-in-the....) for regular customers. Did your relative really read ALL the posters up in the post office before sending the package? Everyone knows that things get lost in the post. It can't be a surprise to anybody. If you want insurance and/or track-and-trace, it is not unreasonable to ask for it.
