My Dad recently retired after reaching the age of 65. He was a PAYE worker for the duration of 2008 until his retirement. He has asked me for some help regarding his tax return for 08.

As he would have been taxed based on a full year rather than the 10 months that he worked in 2008, I assume he would be entitled to a small refund of tax. (He has no other income for the year except he will be in receipt of a pension for Nov/Dec.)

Assuming there is still a refund due at the end of the year, am I correct in saying that he will need to submit a tax return next Spring for 2008, showing his PAYE income and Pension income (state and private) and then any refund that might be due would be returned based on that.

TIA.

Private Pension income is liable to PAYE, and state pension income is taxable, apthough not at source - therefore he will probably use up all his lower rate band and tax credits, so I can't see that a refund will be due, and he actually may have a liability due to his state pension.

Would need figures to crunch to see overall position.

Has he claimed his over 65's tax credit (if married age tax credit x 2). If not dont forget to include it in the 2008 return

No, he wouldn't have that tax credit, so thanks for alerting me to that.

Thks for the responses to date
